Maine's "gold" is its lobster. Its historic predator, cod, has been overfished by others, so Maine has a bountiful supply of superior lobsters. With the world in financial crisis, this "luxury" food is overplentiful and worse, foreign Canadian lobsters masquerade as Maine lobsters due to lack of identification. A further identity theft occurs when government subsidized Canadian plants process Maine lobster and send it back as a product of Canada.
Maine lobstering families work in small boats and they cannot survive without a living wage. The estimated 20 miles left of Maine working waterfront is imperiled to extinction.
